Blog 4: Technological Understanding

The technology standard that I would choose for the 5th-grade level would be the LAF.5.W.1.2. This standard focuses on the use of illustrations and multimedia to extrapolate information and then be able to state the ideas that one has from the said topic clearly. I feel as if with my current skill set I may be able to apply this standard in the classroom since it would allow me to teach students the basic analytical tools that they will be using both in their coming years of education and in life itself. It will be a useful tool for them to learn since it will give them the ability to analyze information instead of taking it in and forgetting it.

The resource that I would use from the CPALMS Educator Toolkit would be from the 5th Grade Art curriculum. The standard would be VA.5.S.1.4. The resource asks the student to create a superhero character that reflects their personality through the use of different colors and art styles. I would use it in my classroom since it will allow the students to describe who they are as an individual through the use of visual media. Sometimes we cannot find the words to describe ourselves and it can be easier to instead use different forms of art to show who we are. After all, if a picture is worth a thousand words, one can only wonder how many words a hand-made painting is worth for a student.

Internet searching is extremely important for a teacher if they want to understand how and where to access necessary information. Knowing how to find information on the internet can lead to the teacher finding a more efficient teaching style for their students or it can find exciting new assignments for students. In other words, it can make the classroom more interesting for both the teacher and the students. An internet skill that I will be using more of moving forward would be the creation of newsletters and graphics since I can make fun graphics for my student before every class or I can provide them new information in an entertaining matter that won't distract them from the learning.

  1. Hey, great post! I really enjoy that you were interested in helping kids express themselves through art and I feel like that is very important in a child's education and development.

  2. Hey Veep! I really enjoyed reading your blog. I found your CPALM very interesting. Children have a hard time understanding themselves and knowing their own personalities. I think it is a great idea to get them to use visual aids to create their superhero and describe themselves.

  3. Hey, I think it's really cool that you would do a superhero-themed assignment. Kids in 5th grade love superheroes, and for them to draw themselves as one would be so special. (An aside--in 12th grade Anatomy, we had to create a superhero for a certain part of the brain. I named mine the Molledo Oblangata--my teacher's name was Molledo, and it was a play on the medulla oblongata. It was a lot of fun!) It's really important for students to have a knowledge of analytical tools as they further their education. I agree that the internet is an important resource for teachers, but hadn't thought about how it could improve their Teaching styles. Great point, and overall great post!
